The first settlers of Tamil Nadu were from the Indus valley .They moved to south when the Aryans began to occupy that area about 1500 BC. However the recorded history of Tamil Nadu starts only from 4th BC. The social, economic and cultural life of the people is referred in the Sangam literature. The Tamils had trade relations with Rome, Greece and Egypt. Before the Christian era, the Cheras, Cholas and Pandias ruled Tamil Nadu. This was the golden period of Tamil literature, art and culture.
